Visual art GROUP

The Shropshire Art Society was officially formed in 1948, following the existence of a group of Shrewsbury artists known as The Shrewsbury Seven, which had been in existence since 1924.

Early exhibitions were held in the Shrewsbury Museum Art Gallery, previously the home of Shrewsbury School. However, following a major refurbishment of the building, the Gallery ceased to function and from 1977 the Society Summer and Autumn Exhibitions were held in Bear Steps Gallery, Shrewsbury.

Latterly, due to the rise in the membership and the required increase in hanging space, the Society now holds a major Annual Summer Exhibition in St.Mary’s Church, Shrewsbury where over 200 pictures can be displayed.

In 1999 the Society expanded from a purely exhibiting Society to embrace drawing & painting classes, visits to major art galleries and painting holidays.
